Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday demanded special protection for satirist Kunal Kamra, after three more police cases were filed against him over his alleged controversial remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Drawing parallels with the security provided to BJP MP Kangana Ranaut during her conflict with Shiv Sena, Raut insisted that Kamra should receive the same level of protection.
“I demand that the Maharashtra government provide special protection to Kunal Kamra. Kangana Ranaut was also given special security when she had a rift with us,” Raut said during a press conference.
Mumbai Police confirmed that three additional complaints have been lodged against Kamra at Khar police station. The complainants include:
- The Mayor of Jalgaon city
- A hotelier from Nashik
- A businessman from Nashik
These cases add to the ongoing legal troubles for the comedian, who was previously summoned for questioning in a case filed by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel.
Despite being issued three summons by Mumbai Police, Kamra has failed to appear so far. He has now been asked to present himself at Khar police station on March 31 for further questioning.
On Friday, the Madras High Court granted interim anticipatory bail to Kamra in connection with multiple FIRs lodged against him. Justice Sunder Mohan ordered interim protection until April 7, subject to certain conditions.
Kamra approached the Madras High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail, stating that he has been receiving multiple threats following his recent satirical comments.
On Thursday, Kamra criticized the mainstream media, accusing it of acting as a mouthpiece for the ruling party. He labeled the media as “vultures” and accused them of distracting the public from important issues.
The controversy erupted after Kamra allegedly made a “gaddar” (traitor) joke directed at Eknath Shinde, sparking outrage among political leaders. Several Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) leaders have condemned his remarks and demanded strict action against him.
With legal troubles mounting and political tensions rising, the focus now shifts to whether Kunal Kamra will receive government protection, as demanded by Sanjay Raut.
